FAQ

What devices are compatible with Postcard Express 1.1?

All of the features of Postcard Express work on an iPhone running OS 3.0+. One of these features is the automatic generation of a mini map that appears in the upper right corner of the digital postcard. Most features of the app will also work on an iPod touch (running OS 3.0+). As the iPod touch lacks a camera, you'll need to choose the “Select photo from Photo Albums” button within the Postcard Express app and select an image from your local photo album. Similarly, as the iPod touch has limited location-aware hardware, Postcard Express will attempt to get your current location using Wi-Fi to generate a mini map. If it cannot, it will render the default postage stamp (not a mini map) in the upper right corner of the card.

How do I upgrade from an older version of Postcard Express?

Postcard Express 1.1 requires the iPhone OS 3.0 or greater. Once you've upgraded, you can upgrade to version 1.1 of Postcard Express for free via iTunes or by launching the App Store on your device, tapping Updates in the bottom tool bar, and downloading the app.

How do I create and send postcards?

Creating and sending postcards with Postcard Express 1.1 is an easy, integrated process. Just take a photo (or select one from the Camera Roll or Photo Album), type a personal message, select a stamp, and tap “Next” to address and send.

What does “sent” technically mean?

After you have placed your photo, chosen your map and typed your message, tap “Next”. This will launch the native iPhone email app. After entering the email addresses of your intended recipients, tap “Send,” and your postcard email will be sent to the outbox of the iPhone's native email app. At this point, you are done. The iPhone's native email app will do the rest automatically. After the email program sends the email, your recipients will get an email from you with your digital postcard inserted into the body of the email or attached.

Do the people I send my postcards to need an iPhone too?

No. To get your postcards, your recipients need a valid email address and any desktop, web, or mobile email program that accepts HTML messages (e.g., Outlook, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, Gmail).

Can I post my cards to my blog, Twitter, Facebook, or Flickr account?

Yes. After you successfully send a digital postcard, you can access it from the camera roll by launching the native iPhone photo album app. It is saved as a high quality JPEG.

Once I take or select a photo for the postcard, can I edit it?

Yes, Postcard Express makes editing your images easy. You can scale an image down by pinching your fingers in the viewfinder, or scale it up by spreading your fingers. You can also move and position the image by swiping your finger in the appropriate direction.

What image formats and sizes does Postcard Express accept?

Postcard Express will accept any image format that is accepted by the native iPhone photo album app (e.g., JPEG, GIF, PNG). These images can be any aspect ratio, however, the app is optimized to accept images that are 4x3 (landscape) or 3x4 (portrait). This is the native aspect ratio of images captured by the built-in iPhone camera. If you wish to use an image of a different aspect ratio in Postcard Express, the app will scale the image and therefore crop portions of it. To avoid this, please open your image in an editor and save as 4x3 or 3x4. You may need to letterbox your image if you wish to avoid cropping.

Do I have any display options with the mini map?

Yes. In addition to the default postage stamp image, there are four options after all the Google Maps API calls are complete. To cycle through these four options, tap the postage stamp area.

Natively, the iPhone cannot read the photo's data (EXIF metadata) to determine the geographic location in which the photo was taken. Instead, it reads your current location at the time you are creating the postcard using your iPhone or iPod touch.

If I purchased my iPhone in the US, can I use Postcard Express when traveling abroad?

Yes, you can use Postcard Express while abroad. Please note that AT&T international data roaming charges may apply, especially if you are connected to the Internet using 3G while abroad. We recommend turning your Data Roaming off and using Wi-Fi if you have access. This can be done by using the iPhone's Settings app.

Will my postcards be saved?

Yes, your sent Postcards will be saved to the Camera Roll on your iPhone. If you are in the process of making a Postcard and get interrupted, you can leave the Postcard Express app and return to it later to complete and send your Postcard as long as you haven't turned off your iPhone. After you successfully send each Postcard, the app will save both your edited image and the final Postcard composite to the Camera Roll folder.
